Business Process Rules (BPR) Modelling; City of Kanata

Contracted to the City of Kanata, Ont. to assist with the implementation and deployment of the Autodesk AMP Development Tracking System. This work began with the development of business process models for municipal services:

  • Minor Variances
  • Official Plan Amendment Process
  • Part Lot Controls
  • Severance Application
  • Sign Permits
  • Site Plan Controls
  • Subdivision Applications
  • Zoning Amendments
  • Building Permits
  • Orders

After the business process models were confirmed with City staff, the AMP Development Tracking System was configured to meet the requirements of the development processes. These processes also addressed issues such as circulation and review of applications from other municipal and outside organizations (i.e., bordering municipalities, the Region of Ottawa-Carleton, Ottawa Hydro, etc.).

The scope of work included the customization and integration of Crystal Report forms to replicate the "look and feel" of the currently used business forms. It was important to show that the technology did not have to drive the business process, but rather that staff could easily adapt to the new technology because it simply "computerized" what they currently did.

Training was provided to City staff in the use of the developed applications. This was an essential part of the project because it not only introduced the clients to the new GIS system, but it also assisted with achieving "buy-in".
